Stainless steel

What do you guys think about a stainless steel barrel/action in a long range hunting rifle. What are the pros and cons?

A stainless barrel will clean easier than a chrome-moly (not chrome-lined) barrel. Most of the better makers premium barrels are stainless these days. If you want a blued look, consider duracoating your stainless.

Stainless actions are not really essential. Stainless will rust. Most trigger parts, firing pins are not stainless anyway.

For a factory rifle, the remington fluted stainless barrels are typically of good quality and light weight. Probably worth buying an all stainless rifle just for the better steel and weight savings if you are going Remington.

An aftermarket stainless barrel will cost about $500-$750 including gunsmith installation, more if you want fluting.

Nice thing about the Rem stainless fluted Sendero & Varmint Specials; they come with H-S Precision stocks which have an integral alum bedding block which promotes repeatable accuracy. You might find a blued version on the cheap, (around $500 used) and then rebarrel. That would be a great way to build a very accurate tactical or hunting rig.
